Factors Limiting Feed

چکیده

T HE mechanisms regulating feed intake appear to be the same mechanisms that control energy exchange. The physiological functions brought into play are numerous and involve chemosensitive areas, reflex responses and integrative function of the central nervous system. Aside from the primary physiological factors limiting feed intake, a close relationship exists in ruminants between the content of indigestible plant residues in the digestive tract and the total amount of feed consumed. Brief attention will be given first to the current concepts of physiological factors involved in the regulation of feed intake in ruminants. The second part deals with the importance of digestibility in regulating feed intake in terms of quantifying its effects and interrelationships. For a more complete discussion the reader is referred to a review by Fissmer (1941) of the early work and a review of recent work by Balch and Campling (1962). The stimuli for changes in food intake arise from animal functions and environmental conditions. In the ruminant the rate of energy expenditure, environmental temperature, qualitative characteristics of the diet and the physical effects of food in the gut are significant factors influencing the level and day-to-day changes in food consumption. Fundamental to an understanding of feed intake regulation is the concept expressed by Brobeck (1960) that feed intake is not an independent variable, since animals obtain all of the energy transferred to heat, work and storage (includes growth, fat deposition and milk) from the feed. Any one of these physiological functions may change in magnitude relative to the other. It is apparent, therefore, that the four variables are regulated individually as well as together. Adolph (1947) has stated that food intake is one of the best regulated of animal functions. However, the complexity of describing

Supplemental Feeding Application of Northern Bobwhite in South Texas

Supplemental feeding is a tool for enhancing northern and some of the economic implications of feeding. This bobwhite (Colinus virginianus) populations on hunting leases in South Texas. Feeding may be used to improve winter survival, reproduction and/or harvest of birds. Before implementing a feeding program, operators should consider management goals and the factors limiting quail populations....

Digestion criteria in nursing beef calves supplemented with limited levels of protein and energy.

This study was conducted with grazing nursing calves (197 kg) to determine the effects of 1) limiting creep feed intake and 2) increasing the concentration of ruminal escape CP in creep feed at a limited level of creep feed intake on fescue and milk intake, ruminal NDF digestion, and total tract digestibility in calves fed high-quality, freshly harvested fescue. The treatments were 1) control (...

Nature of hunger and satiety control systems in ruminants.

Understanding mechanisms in control of feed intake and regulation of energy balance in the ruminant is of great importance if improvement in efficiency of production is to be continued. Although there is evidence in both ruminants and monogastrics that body energy content is regulated, under certain circumstances the system can be overridden with the result being either excessive weight gain or...

Nutritional constraints to grazing ruminants in the millet-cowpea-livestock farming system of the Sahel

Growing pearl millet and cowpea in combination with raising ruminant livestock is widely practised in the Sahel. In this farming system, livestock feeding depends mostly on rangeland, fallows and cropland grazing. Nutritional constraints to grazing ruminants stem primarily from feed scarcity and seasonal fluctuations in feed supply associated with low rainfall and poor soil fertility. Low feed ...

The voluntary feed intake of pigs given feeds based on wheat bran, dried citrus pulp and grass meal, in relation to measurements of feed bulk.

Two experiments were carried out to investigate the capacities of pigs for bulky feeds. In Expt 1 fifteen pigs were offered, from 12 to 25 kg live weight, ad lib. access to one of five feeds which were made by progressively diluting a high-quality feed with wheat bran. Intake initially increased, and then declined, as the proportion of wheat bran was increased. The pigs became better able to ac...
